On June 9th , Mr. Peng Gang, Minister of the Chinese Mission to the EU, attended the Hong Kong Seminar in Europe 2022 held by the Federation of Hong Kong Business Association Worldwide and Hong Kong Economic & Trade Office in Brussels, and delivered a keynote speech. Minister Peng was joined by Mr. Francis HO, Acting Director-General of Trade and Industry of the government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, Mr. Eddie Cheung, Special Representative for Hong Kong Economic and Trade Affairs to the European Union, Mr. Jorge Costa Oliveira, former Secretary of State of Internationalization of Portugal, senior officials and business representatives.

In his keynote speech, Mr. Peng said that economic globalization and free trade are the cornerstones for the development and prosperity of human society, and are commitment and principle that we must abide by for a long time ahead. Despite the countercurrents and dangerous shoals along the way, economic globalization has never and will not veer off course. China and the EU have always been staunch practitioners and defenders of free trade. The 23rd China-EU Summit has not only laid a solid foundation for the further development of China-EU relations, injected new impetus into China-EU cooperation in various fields, but also provides an important platform for China and the EU to discuss international issues. China is ready to work with the EU and other countries in the world to uphold true multilateralism, firmly safeguard the international system with the UN at its core, the international order based on international law, and the multilateral trading system with the WTO at its core, and work together to overcome all kinds of challenges on the way forward and usher in a brighter and better future for mankind.

Minister Peng pointed out that under the guidance of the political principles of "one country, two systems", "Hong Kong people administering Hong Kong" and a high degree of autonomy, Hong Kong has made great progress in various undertakings over the past 25 years, and the “Pearl of the Orient” has become even more attractive than ever before. Looking ahead, with the firm support of the central government, Hong Kong should continue to leverage its unique geographical advantage of being "backed by the motherland and connected with the world", fully serve China's reform, opening-up and dual-cycle strategy, and will make a more significant and unique contribution to the further deepening of all-round cooperation in foreign finance, trade and investment in the Greater China region.

Minister Peng also answered questions on topics such as China's prevention and control policies of COVID-19, China and the EU work together to uphold the global multilateral trading system.
